Timely jetty refurbishment for radio yacht champions

A FLEET of colourful radio yachts hit the water recently to welcome $50,000 in State Government funding to restore and improve the Montrose Bay public jetty.

The jetty is currently being utilised by both the Montrose Bay Yacht Club and Outrigger Canoe Club to support its on-water activities.

The Community Infrastructure Fund grant will see the addition of safety rails, resurfacing and widening of the jetty to allow greater community and disability access.

Speaker of the House of Assembly and Liberal Member for Denison Elise Archer, who visited the club recently to announce the funding, said the jetty would also be used to dock support and rescue boats, as well as launch and retrieve radio yachts.

“The Montrose Foreshore Community Park is a fantastic resource which is well utilised by the wider community,” she said.

“The refurbishment of the jetty will ensure that it continues to be an important venue for a whole range of water-based activities.”

The Risdon Brook Radio Yacht Club (RBRYC) recently commenced conducting events at Montrose Bay and will be among those making use of the jetty upon completion of the repairs.

RBRYC Commodore David Murfett said the club welcomed the timely refurbishment of the public jetty.

He said RBRYC members planned to use Montrose Bay to host the upcoming Australian Radio Yachting Association National Championships from 12-24 February 2018.

“The Championships will cover four international radio yacht classes and attract more than 100 competitors from around Australia and up to 20 international competitors,” he said.

Radio sailing is as technical as sailing a full sized yacht and rig.

The racing rules are exactly the same and skippers must be as tactically astute as any other sailor.

“Montrose Bay is a world-class facility for yachting, especially for radio yachts,” Ms Archer said.

“This event will showcase radio yachting in Tasmania and the picturesque location provides an excellent opportunity to promote our state to both interstate and international visitors.”
