THE 2016/17 lawn bowls season culminated with a great thrill for the Glenorchy City Bowls Club when it was presented with the Fitzgerald Trophy at the Bowls Tasmania South (BTS) presentation night.
The Fitzgerald Trophy is presented each year to the bowls club with the best win/loss record in pennant bowls in the BTS pennant competition.
Glenorchy City Bowls Club president Leigh McAdam said it was a “very proud” moment when the club was announced as the winners of the trophy.
“We have been very close to winning the trophy in the previous two seasons but hadn’t quite managed to get over the line,” he said.
“It was a bit of a surprise to be honest when we were announced as the winners on the night, but when I reflect back on the year it really has been another great year for the club.”
The club currently fields six sides in Saturday, Ladies Thursday and Men’s Midweek Pennant – five of which made the finals.
But it was in Men’s Midweek Pennant that the club enjoyed its greatest success, with the Division 2 side finishing on top of the ladder at the end of the roster season, before going on to win the grand final against the Royal Hobart Club.
“This was a great effort by those involved throughout the year and in the finals”, Mr McAdam said.
“We are classed as a B-Grade club as our top Saturday side plays in Division 3, so to beat sides that have a number of players from much higher Premier League and Divisions 1 and 2 was a terrific result.
“By virtue of finishing on top of the ladder, the club has earned a promotion to Division 1 next season.
“We know this will be tough as we will be coming up against some top class bowlers, some of whom are state representatives, but we are really looking forward to the challenge.”
Now that the bowls pennant season has finished, the Glenorchy City Bowls Club is running random draw social bowls on both Monday and Saturday afternoons.
Each day starts at 12.30pm with player registrations from 12noon.
Cost is $7 per player and play finishes at 3pm, followed by afternoon tea and presentations to winners and losers.
The Glenorchy City Bowls Club is located at 4 Alcorso Drive, Berriedale and is always on the lookout for new members, whether they are experienced bowlers or new players.
Anyone interested can contact the club on telephone 6249 1272 or Leigh McAdam on mobile 0419 593 184.
