THE Collingwood Magpies and the Giants went head-to-head at the Derwent Entertainment Centre (DEC) in early February – in a game that was eventually won by the Giants 52-46 – as part of the Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) practice match.
A larger than expected crowd of more than 2000 people created a high energy atmosphere with fans warming up with a game between the under-17 and under-19 Tasmanian state teams.
The Magpies and Giants game proved a close one, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats.
This was then complemented by the half-time display by Netball Tasmania and the up and comers from Netsetgo.
Netball Tasmania chief executive officer Aaron Pidgeon said he was “extremely pleased” with the turnout.
“More than 2000 people for a practice match is an excellent result,” he said.
“The SSN match was great and the DEC proved itself as an outstanding venue for netball.
“I would hope that everyone who attended was pleased with the event and will be keen to come back again for the next one.”
DEC assistant venue manager Sarah Mitchell said the DEC team was excited to have teams of this high calibre use the new court and provide Hobart with a great evening of sport.
“This community based event was very successful and the DEC looks forward to continuously working and delivering these events for not only Hobart, but Tasmania,” she said.
