Partnership creates job opportunities

LONG-TERM unemployed are receiving the chance to find jobs in the metals industry thanks to a partnership between TasTAFE and MAX Employments.

The second group of 10 participants have now completed a four-week Basic Aluminium/Steel Fabrication Skill Set training course, which took place at TasTAFE’s Bender Drive campus.

Max Employment partnership manager Tania Bailey said the organisation had identified that a short-term skill set in the metal fabrication area was a potential opportunity to train up some of its long-term unemployed clients.

She said metal fabrications had been highlighted as an area of demand.

“We understood that there were organisations such as Incat who were looking for people with skills in this area to fill trade assistant roles,” she said.

“We worked with TasTAFE to develop a skill set which would meet the needs of the industry, as well as our clients.

“They were really flexible in working with us to tailor skill set training to a four-week period, which suited the needs of our clients.

“This training has been life-changing for many of the participants as they are now engaged and excited about the training, have grown in confidence and are now setting their sights on getting a job.”

TasTAFE Metals South education manager Mark Geeves said the skill set training covered a range of areas including sheet and plate assembly, gas metal arc welding, using hand and power tools and occupational health and safety.

“Working with the group from Max Employment has been particularly rewarding for our teachers who have been able to share their skills and knowledge with the group and set them on the path to finding employment,” he said.

The first round of the program began in May and four of the eight participants have already been employed at Incat as trade assistants.

Trade assistant roles are often the first step for people in the industry before they gain apprenticeships.
