NORTHERN suburbs residents and gardening enthusiasts should mark 14-15 January in their calendars for the Claremont Flower Show Group’s 2017 Lilium, Rose and Summer Flower Show.
Held in the Claremont Memorial Hall, the flower show is set to attract exhibitors from Hobart and surrounds, as well as respected growers from Tasmania’s north-west coast.
Claremont Flower Show Group secretary Stan Walker said the 2017 Summer Show was particularly special, as it would mark the event’s silver anniversary.
Mr Walker said the committee was expecting a large turnout from exhibitors to celebrate the special occasion.
“For the show’s competitive classes, the Open Section and Seedling Raised Class entries will be benched at high level international standards and the quality of the flowers is normally very high,” he said.
“However, the really exceptional thing about the Claremont Summer Flower Show is that it is essentially a community event.
“All members of the public are welcome and encouraged to bring their flowers to the show, regardless of their horticultural skills.
“It has been well documented that gardening is not only one of nature’s most therapeutic past times, but that it also has the ability to break down barriers between strangers.
“This show is a wonderful example of these two principles.”
Mr Walker said both budding and experienced horticulturists would have the chance to show off their gardening skills in a range of exhibits.
“This includes liliums – divided into open, amateur, restricted and novice classes – fruit and vegetables, roses, fuchsias, dahlias, bulbs/corms/tubers, gladioli, perennials, Australian natives, pelargoniums, floral arts and the children’s section,” he said.
“There will also be a section for members of the three local garden clubs, as well as a photographic section.”
There will be no cost to display flowers, but a gold coin donation is required to view the exhibits.
The Summer Flower Show will be held on Saturday 14 January from 1-5pm, which includes the official opening and trophy presentations, and Sunday 15 January from 10am to 4pm.
The Claremont Memorial Hall is located at the corner of Bilton Street and Main Road Claremont.
